Kachin Food And Culture

                Kachin state is located at the northernmost part in Myanmar situated nearby China to the north and east. It is one of the most beautiful territories in Myanmar which is filled with a magnificent view of landscapes with green pastures. The land is occupied with priceless jewels and gems. The state is especially best known globally for its valuable jade and green stone. But the most important which people usually missed out is its interesting delicious cuisines and culture at a glimpse. The best way to understand Kachin culture is by trying it because food practices reveals an abundance of information about individuals and groups including the economic, political, social, cultural significant of food in society (Almerico, 2014).                  There are countless varieties of delicious delicacies which can be fulfilled for the hungry bellies. The food that could satisfy your hunger is best served in the Kachin state and any other part of Myanmar. The savory food which can be consumed at any corner of households, if you happen to visit any in the place are available everywhere once you stepped foot in the land of Kachin.

                 Kachin food is mostly prepared with little or no oil at all. It is mainly dependent on herbs and spices thus, does not cause worries for most people and can be consumable for everyone with any health issues. One of the most delicious food is well known as ‘Shat Jam’ meaning ‘Rice Salad: well-cooked white rice which is mingled evenly with salt, boiled and drained chicken floss, herbs (machyang si), Shan parsley, a little of fresh a grind gingers fluid, aromatic leaf (mahkaw nam), boiled green pea and carrot and adding fried onion would make a fine dish for the family breakfast.

There are many other types of food and side dishes which are available in the area: a minced or pounded beef dish (Shang Hkak), cooked with adding aromatic leaves and spices: ground basil, garlic, ginger, and pepper. Kachin steamed fish (wrapped in a banana leaf) is the popular dish in the clan and is available anywhere within Myanmar. Among the famous side dishes are ‘hkang hkri’, fermented vegetables which is served mostly with noodles, ‘jap htu’, chilies pounded using pestle in a mortar, which is served as the most common side dish on the dining tables for the Kachin people.

                 Food is one of the major things which bought the Kachin people united. Wherever the food is served, there will be laughter and joyous presence which brighten up the atmospheres. It is the most important recipe in the beautiful unique culture of Kachin. When a groom wanted to extend the hand of his bride for marriage, his family brings piles of baskets filled with Kachin food known as ‘Shat lit’ to ask for her hand in marriage to his future bride’s family. This is the ceremony to represents the beautiful culture of respect between the two families. Most of the festivals and ceremonies are mainly depend on food as respect towards each other in the clan. When sister who is already married visits once a year to her brother home, she brings ‘Shat lit’ as a respect to the brother. Thus, food is not just food itself but respect and culture which united siblings, families, and friends.
